Ocean Therapy

Have you ever wondered why we are so drawn to the ocean?

Nearly 70% of the human body is made up of water. Similarly, over 3/4 of the Earth is comprised of the ocean. Ancient Ayurvedic wisdom noted water as the most crucial element to balancing the body and creating physical harmony.
When you are close to water, the healings that occur in your mind and body is as effective as taking medicine. Because caring for our body is so heavily connected to water, we want to share with you three reasons why you should plan to spend more time by the ocean this summer:

1. Ocean air does wonders. The air by the sea is full of negatively charged hydrogen ions that helps our body absorb oxygen and balance serotonin levels. This results in higher energy and diminishes depression. Breathing in the fresh salty air also improves our respiratory system especially for those suffering from asthma, bronchitis, allergies and coughs.

2. Our brain needs a break. Being around water gives our brains and our senses a rest from overstimulation. Many of us live in the city, where we are overwhelmed by hundreds of pieces of information every second. From music playing on the radio to Facebook messages on our phone. We cannot stop processing these sounds and sights. By the ocean, the audio and visual input we receive from water is much more simplified. This allows our brain to relax and our senses to open similar to the calming effect of a mildly meditative state. 

3. Connect to something greater than yourself. Gazing into a vast blue sea often invokes the feelings of awe that increase our capacity for connection and empathy. Our worries and problems suddenly seemed insignificant compared to the divine creations of nature. Big and small waves come and go, we notice the ever-changing nature of water. A sense of happiness and contentment emerges as we begin to appreciate each moment just as they are. 

Next time when that throbbing headache comes again, don't go reaching for sleeping pills or Tylenol. Try ocean therapy instead and let your body heal itself.
